Logging Sheets

by doing these logging sheets it will allow us to decrease the production time as all the footage taken has been given a tick or a cross depending on if we are using the footage. also there i a comment on the quality and suitability of the footage which will give us a better insight into what the footage will look like. therefore this post is very valuable as we will refer back to it in the production process.

Schedules and Evidence of Filming - Jonathan Wade

(view on blog for wideo to come up)

Setting up equipment - Jack Thompson

This process allowed us to learn all the sufficient skills to set up the equipment in the relevant manor so that our clips will look as professional as possible. we learnt how to safely carry and open the tripod while making sure it is level using the built in spirit level. This makes sure all the clips taken are level with the ground so it looks balanced. Secondary we had to learn how to put the base plate on the camera correctly and then insert it into the slot on the tripod ensuring the camera is fully locked in so it is safe to use. Learning these skills will significantly help us in filming phase of the creation of the documentary enabling us to create the best product possible.

Codes and Conventions of Interviews - Philip Costin

It is important for us to understand and break down how professional documenter interviews happen and the best way to keep ours looking good. We intend to use many vox-pops in our documentary, mainly involving those near our target audience age. We can take away from this  the traditional types of shot used such as the MCU and the also very important factor of relevant mise en scen in the background. We can go forward in our blogging and filming knowing how we want the interviews set up and look for relevant mise en scen ideas.

Expert interview - Jonathan Wade

Here is an example of an expert interview on mobile phone developments, we aim to replicate some aspects of this.

This task focused on researching which member of staff would be best suited to our documentary. The final decision was displayed and reasoning for why we  have chose them and a basic profile is put forward. In our documentary we will be interviewing both of these experts so the information is relevant. The target audience for this task (in terms of who our experts are) are in the age range of 30-50, this was because their knowledge will be much more complete then a younger member of staff. Both experts will be a part of our planning as we need to decide the best place in which to complete the interview.

Mise-en-scene - Jonathan Wade

This task was completed to research into where we will complete the shots and also other aspects such as lightings. This will be shown in our documentary as the best places that we found will be used to film key interviews and background footage from around the college. To choose lighting techniques I researched into the conventional lighting used into documentaries, there my knowledge developed. This will also be used on the blog in our schedules as the backgrounds researched will be used in the planning of filming.

Arranging interviews - Jack Thompson

We tried to interview an employee as well but decided after refusals to take part, we thought it was for the best not to get too many interviews as we don't won't to fill our documentary with interviews.

Vox Pop questions

Vox Pop questions
1) Do you own a mobile phone?

2) How often do you use it?

3) What do you mainly use your mobile phone for?

4) How old where you when you got your first phone?

5) Is there a home phone in your household?

6) Are you addicted to your mobile phone?

The purpose of the questions is to ask our target age group questions on mobile phones. They will represent the new generation and we can observe the results to see if we really are a tech obsessed. When deciding the questions we tried to relate them to the answers that we needed, once they were completed we made final judgements on our findings.

Expert interview questions

Expert interview questions
Richard: (tech expert)
1) In recent years, how fast has the growth of mobile phone usage been?

2) Have you seen a rise in the amount of people using mobile phones?

3) Have the developments in mobile phones caused other devices to fall in demand?

4) Do you feel pressure to update your phone often?

5) Do you still think theres more room for mobile phone developments?

These questions our specifically designed for Richard as we knew his rich background in technology. Also we could tailor other questions to the fact he works in a college and has observed students in classrooms over a period of time and may have noticed the increase in phone usage.

Julie Maitland: (college councillor)
1)In recent years, have you noticed the increase in mobile phone usage?

2)Have you noticed, over this time period, an increase of cyber bullying?

3)Have you found cases of students addicted to their mobile phones?

4)Have you found a correlation between mobile phone usage and underachievement in grades?

These questions are also important in their own right because as Julie is a councillor she would know about the ugly side of mobile phones and the ethical issues that can have effects on not only students but the populous  as a whole, such as cyber bullying.

Risk Assessments - Philip Costin

Location Recce - Jack Thompson & Phil Costin

-We will use a plain white wall as a background because it makes it easier for us to edit things  behind it and puts all focus on the interviewee as they will be holding or wearing objects that show  the link with them and college.
-We may use a brick wall as a background because it makes vox pops clearer and puts all focus on  the interviewee as they will be holding or wearing objects that show the link with them and college.  Although the mise en scen would be questionable.
-The communal college garden may provide good background footage as it is a popular area that  we could film students 'hanging out'.
-The theatre may be a good room to use as it could put emphasis on a point whilst front on stage,    or the reverse view and show students on their phones filling the seats.
-The cafe area we took photos of will be a great place to film background footage, vox-pops and  other interviews.
-The shots of the college sign and the college building may be useful when introducing the college in  the documentary and significant to the documentary.
-Finally the shot of the computer may be used for looking at phones on the internet as well as  backgrounds for interviews. The classroom as a whole is somewhere we can film background  footage.
These shots fit with conventions as there are a lot of typical establishing shots and plain or computer backgrounds common in use with vox-pops and expert interviews. We want to use these kinds of locations so that our documentary looks as professional.

Questionnaire Results - Jack Thompson

Questionnaire-Topic - Jack Thompson

The purpose of this questionnaire is similar to the documentary questionnaire as it is given us valuable information that would be difficult to get in other situations. Like the Documentary questionnaire, there are a variety of open ended questions and multiple choice all based on mobile phones. The results gained from these questionnaires maybe used in our documentary for facts but the main reason for them is to show generally the amount of time mobile phones are used in everyday life. The amount of time the audience use their phones may be shocking to them. That is what we hope to gain from the creation of the documentary.

Questionnaire-Documentary - Jack Thompson

I have produced a questionnaire that asks the target audience a variety of multiple choice and open-ended questions about documentaries in general. These questions will give us more detailed information about the target audience's preferences of documentaries enabling us to create a top quality documentary with all the preferred features of a documentary. This information will affect the clips we plan to get, for example if the results show that people prefer a presenter or not then we will use a presenter in our documentary. By complying to the audience's preferences our documentary will be of a higher quality while being factual and educating.

Potential Facts and Statistics - Philip Costin

This is a post I decided to do off my own back as I thought it was important to have a set of facts we can use and can reference to where we found these facts. We can also use more facts further on if we find any new, more relevant, facts. I intend for us to apply this to our documentary at a time where facts seem relevant to put in and emphasise our points. I tried to extract more facts concerning our target audience of younger people so that the facts are more relevant and hit the audience harder. We can also use these facts later in our blog and bring them up in one of our expert interviews about the technology of mobile phones.

Article Research Evidence - Philip Costin

It was important to do this research to see others opinions and reasoned arguments with facts. We can learn from this style and use the facts we found in our documentary.

Overall analysis and how this will help our documentary

What happened in Kavos overall analysis
Sound
I discovered that multiple interviews are used as well as a narration and vox-pops. These are present to enhance a documentary format in a conventional manner, we will seek to replicate a similar format for our documentary. There are also multiple diegetic sounds used, including sounds from night clubs, these are related to the subject of the documentary and the issues raised with a clubbing atmosphere. We have decided to try and use this information and develop it by using mobile phone related sounds such as mobile phones ringing.

Image
A wide range of images and camera shots are used to give a visual representation of what is being discussed. It varies from images related directly to what the narrator is saying to more general images which given information beyond what we are being told. In our documentary we are going to have a wide range of footage related to our narration such as people on mobile phones, however we are also going to get more footage of relevant ideas such as cars for the idea of drink driving.

The devil made me do it overall analysis
Sound
Once again there are multiple interviews with the public and with experts. We will try and get expert interviews in our documentary to provide support for the ideas that we raise. There are a large amount of non-diegetic sounds used which add to the atmosphere of the documentary, we will not copy this to a large extent but there will be some sound effects added such as the ringing of phones. To follow conventions there is a narration providing speech over image, we will seek to replicate this and provide certain ideas for the viewers to approach.

Image
Early on their are useful images which explains the basis of the documentary, we will follow this as we want our audience to know the intended meaning of our documentary. Once more there are multiple images of what the narrator is describing, this is stereotypical of documentaries and we will follow this convention. In the documentary pictures of victims are used, this allow us to become more personal with the characters discussed. We will not follow this to a large extent as we feel it is important for our audience to have their own views rather than having to have everything explained to them.

What Happens in Kavos

Before this task our knowledge on documentaries were limited, however after it we got an insight into what is classed as a typical documentary. Our documentary will have similar aspects, we took notes on how they edit and use the 'voice of God' technique. This will be applied to our documentary as we will aim to follow some conventions such as a voice over. Our target audience for this task was mixed as all we needed was conventions in similar documentaries.

Our Proposal

Documentary name ideas & Chosen name - Jonathan Wade

Documentary names on PhotoPeach

The purpose of this task was to discuss how we decided on the documentary name 'my cell friend', it shows the process of choosing the right name for the audience. This information will be used in the documentary as the title of it is the one that was discussed in detail through the use of the audio clip. This will also effect further posts on the blog as we refer to the chosen documentary name on a regular basis.

Our Target Audience - Philip Costin

Channel Research - Jonathan Wade

We completed this task as we had to decide what channel would be the best to publish our documentary on. We will be using our results to come to a final decision on what channel we are going to be linked with and then this will be used to complete a proposal. With the final decision we will complete an editing style suitable to the channel. Through this tasks my understand of codes and conventions have developed, I have learnt the typical style of documentary is a mixed one. The target audience for this task was 15-30 as we are aiming to achieve a modern style of documentary.

Our Chosen Topic - Philip Costin

I learnt a lot over the course of this particular task especially with the use of new software such as powtoon. It was also important for us to make sure we all felt the same way about the positives and negatives of having mobile phones being are topic and the target audience that we would likely aim at. Us doing separate posts on the positives and negatives on topics allowed us to compare our ideas and learn from each others opinions, especially as we our own target audience.

Our top 3 topics - Jonathan Wade

This task was vital as it was deciding the basic of the whole documentary, it gave further depth into our favourite choices and an insight into the chosen topic. This information will effect the whole blog as every task will be completed around research into mobile phone (the chosen topic). The documentary will also be based around the chosen topic so it starts the basis of our documentary. For this task I aimed my research into those with a large interest in the chosen topics, the age group was 16-30 so we could get a wide range of views.

10 Possible Topics - Jack Thompson

I created this post to display all the possible documentary topics creating this summary allowed us to look at the most plausible and the one that had been done the least so our documentary would stand out from the others. Because not many people have done our chosen topic it will make it more enjoyable for the target audience to watch as it is unlikely they have seen a similar documentary therefore will be less repetitive and more interesting. This post will directly effect the rest of our blog as all later posts will be orientated around our chosen topic.

Our Topics Mind Map

Diary #2 - Jonathan Wade

I completed and edited this update to show how i have improved throughout the coursework, it gives examples of aspects which i feel i have improved on. This has no effect on our documentary but it gives explanation on what we have completed on our blog.

Media Theories - Jack Thompson

While creating this topic I learnt a lot about slide share and some of the conventions of documentaries so when creating the documentray we can take these theories into account so overall the documentary will be more professional. If the documentary is more professional then the target audience will take it more seriously and connect with them more. This will influence the rest of the blog as it effects other things such as location and camera angles because if one of the two examples don't comply with the conventions it makes the overall documentary look bad and untidy.

Narrative Theorists - Philip Costin

This task was important for us to complete and use as a reference for knowledge and potential guidance later in our documentary making process. The information we gained in class and found ourselves about these theorists is important so we can style our documentary to meet 'traditional' documentary conventions. We had learnt a lot from these theorists both in and outside classroom lessons especially for Todorov's narrative theory of an equilibrium that we see is an important part of the documentary process.

Narrative Structure - Jack Thompson

Open Narrative example

Linear Narrative example

The purpose for the narrative structure post is to show all the various narratives that are reasonable for us to use in our documentary. This helps us produce a vision of how we want our documentary to look and the message it gives to the audience. The message is that mobile phones are unethical and can cause problems in the work place and even death in the case of cars. This post is relevant to the target audience as the choice of narrative will give a different effect on the target audience for example if the documentary was an open narrative then all the questions posed are not directly answered therefore allows the audience to come up with their own conclusion.

Types of Documentary - Philip Costin

Example of Fly on the Wall - Big Brother

\
Example of Fully Narrated - David Attenborough - Wonderful World

It is vitally important for us that we are constantly aware of the types of documentary so that we can make an informed choice of what we want our type of documentary to be and what we need that to include to be a part of this type. We can learn from this post and examples as to how we want to approach our documentary and the target audience we aim at.

Research:
We will undertake research into many areas surrounding codes of documentaries and how we can apply these to our target audiences. Starting with only a basic understanding all research will help us learn and aid us in understanding the purpose of certain codes as well as how to effectively apply them. Overall this will allow us to learn and create a professional documentary.

Documentary conventions - Jonathan Wade

This task was intended to discover what is essential in a conventional documentary, it gives explanations on what each of these conventions are. With this research we will try and use most of the conventions in our final documentary product, the explanations show what we will be using in our documentary. The blog will take use of this as when researching further there will be examples of documentaries that follow these conventions.

Genre, History & Modes - Jonathan Wade

Nanook Of The North - video clip

Through this task I aimed to get further knowledge into the history and modes of the genre. I also found out key figures in the start up of the conventional documentary. This information will be used ain the blog to complete further tasks on key figures, the modes also relate to later examples. In our documentary we will use some of the modes as a start, the whole documentary is based on John Grierson's findings.

Explain your brief - Jack Thompson

For our A2 coursework we have been assigned groups of 3 to create 3 different aspects of a documentary. These aspects are the opening 5 minutes of a TV documentary (40 marks), a radio trailer (10 marks)and a double page spread (10 marks) from magazine listings all focused on our documentary. We also have to produce two sections of research and planning (20 marks) and the evaluation (20 marks). Within the evaluation there are 4 questions asked.
  1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions ?
  2. How effective is your media product?
  3. What have you learned from the audience?
  4. How did you use new media technologies?
With all the individual sections combined there are a total of 100 marks available for the coursework. To make it easier for the examiner to mark we frequently add posts to a blog to display our progress in a suitable and professional approach.
